Marryabroad.co.uk reveals changes in destination wedding trends over past three years

Press Release Canada most popular wedding destination in 2010 Sri Lanka more desirable than Thailand for British couples Destination wedding website MarryAbroad.co.uk has today released figures showing the trends in country choice for couples choosing to get married abroad, with some surprising results. For the first time in three years a non-European country, Canada, has topped the list of most popular countries for British couples to get married. Another non-European destination, Sri Lanka, makes an impressive debut appearance in the list at number two, while India creeps in at number ten. In contrast, 2008’s number two, Thailand, slips out of the top ten altogether and long-haul destination Australia drops to nine. As expected, European countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Greece and Cyprus have remained in the top ten, but their fortunes have been mixed. Spain, which topped the list in 2009, only managed seventh in 2010, perhaps due to off-putting residency requir...

Canada, Sri Lanka and Italy top countries as Marryabroad.co.uk celebrates 5th birthday

-Press Release - Canada, Sri Lanka and Italy were the most visited pages on destination wedding website MarryAbroad.co.uk in 2010, covering three continents and a very diverse selection of wedding ceremonies. The site reaches the dizzy heights of five years old on 19th January and has seen the wedding abroad industry boom since it was launched. The popularity of these three countries show that a wedding abroad has become much more personal to the bride and groom, with less couples happy to choose a package off a shelf, but preferring to create a bespoke ceremony personal to them and their life experiences. And, despite the recent world-wide economic woes, the destination wedding industry continues to grow. MarryAbroad.co.uk has seen the largest increase in visitors over the past two years (120% in 2010 alone), just as the recession started to bite. Cost may be a large factor in this, since a wedding abroad on average costs £6,000, compared to the UK average of £20,000. Information is k...

Marry Abroad on the BBC!

We've just been on the BBC World Service talking about the fake wedding in the Maldives which is now in the news. The Maldives is a beautiful country, with lovely people, it's such a shame that a few people have been so inhospitable to this wedding couple. Legally foreigners can't get married in the Maldives, but many couples have a wedding blessing. Don't let this incident put you off if you're considering having a ceremony there - it's a true tropical paradise!

Getting married abroad - tips for couples

A volcano may not be the first thing you think of when planning your wedding abroad, but having all flights grounded is a major problem for couples deciding to marry abroad! Luckily the main wedding season tends to start around the end of April, so fingers crossed that a solution is found in the next two weeks for all couples looking forward to their special day this summer. In the meantime, for anyone thinking about getting married abroad - don't forget the wedding and travel insurance when you book your ceremony. Wedding insurance is valuable to protect against unforseen circumstances, and travel insurance should cover most eventualities for your travel and accommodation costs. Just remember to check the fine print to make sure volcano action is covered!

A Valentine's Wedding

Many couples get engaged on Valentine's Day, but many others actually get married on the day. We asked Czech wedding planners White - Prague Wedding Agency to describe one of the 2009 Valentine's Day weddings they organised - if you'd like something similar next year you should book the date now! Ivanka and Roman's Valentine's Day Wedding What can be more romantic and symbolic than to wed your love on Saint Valentines day, a day that belongs to lovers. Therefore Ivanka & Roman decided to get married on Valentine's day only a few weeks before the wedding day. As they wished to have a small, chamber wedding with just two witnesses, everything was achievable to plan in a short amount of time. The couple chose the beautiful Chateau Mcely as their wedding venue. Chateau Mcely, located in the very heart of the St. George Forest, offers its guests maximum comfort in romantic neo-classicist style. The chateau is just one hour from Prague, but feels infinitely remov...

How to get married in France

It's a new year and many couples will have become engaged over the Christmas and New Year period and will now be thinking about where to get married. France is a popular choice for a wedding abroad, so we asked Anne from wedding planning firm Fete in France the best way to have a ceremony in this romantic country. Anne says "the legal bit can be a stumbling block for some people but it shouldn't discourage couples from getting married in France. The law basically stipulates that you need to civilly wed before you can have a religious ceremony. (Most French couples these days have a civil wedding at their local 'mairie' and then a few weeks or even months later they will have a religious ceremony with a traditional wedding reception.) If you are not a resident of France for at least 40 days prior to the wedding then you cannot have a legal wedding in France. Obviously, most couples coming from the UK fall into this latter category. Here are a few options to work ...

Create your own Fairy Tale Wedding Abroad

The land of the castles and the beer cellars with proper, snowy winters and beautiful blooming summer times. The Czech Republic is a prosaic name for a lovely place, full of drama, mystery and history. The ideal place to get married, pledge your lives to each other and eat duck with cherries washed down with beer. There are castles and chateaus dotted all around the countryside outside the country's capital, Prague. Most of them were abandoned during the Cold War and left to crumble amid overgrown gardens and fallen trees. Now, a new generation of Czech entrepreneurs, often backed by foreign investors, have started restoring these historic buildings, building on their history by sympathetically renovating them back to their former glory. Highlights include beautifully chandeliered rooms that manage to look intimate and theatrical at once and are perfect for weddings; local food perfectly prepared; cosy and comfortable rooms; not forgetting the obligatory in-house spa for pre and po...

Save money on your wedding abroad

One of the major costs if you have a wedding abroad is the cost of transferring the money to pay your wedding planner abroad. Bank charges can be high and credit cards don't always offer the best exchange rate, so one good way to minimise the cost of exchanging your money is to use an independent currency broker. We have teamed up with World First Foreign Exchange to give you access to excellent exchange rates worldwide - you can even check out the cost of the conversion from one currency to another on our new currency converter page , so you'll always know the total cost of your wedding. There's no excuse to overspend now! For further details please also see our latest press release .

Rise in “Holiday” Weddings

Houses may be falling in value, food prices may be rising, but there’s one thing most of us can’t do without – a holiday! The world’s credit problems may not ease up any time soon but one “essential” that most couples will not give up easily is a holiday. Lean times call for innovative thinking and many engaged couples are being drawn to combining their annual holiday with planning their wedding abroad. For those who were thinking of having an overseas wedding anyway it’s a simple equation – save money by getting married abroad and combine your holiday with making the wedding arrangements. Alternatively, many couples are deciding that they like their holiday location so much they want to get married there instead of at home! Candida Jane Blaxall from Whatever Ibiza recently married a UK couple who had discovered Ibiza’s more romantic side, she says “the groom had been coming over with the lads for years when one time saw the other side of Ibiza and discovered the chilled out island we ...
